The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a financial aid program that can help you pay for college or university.

  • How do I apply for OSAP?

  • When will I receive my OSAP funding?
    Approval usually takes 5–7 business days after applying. The first payment (60% of the total amount) is disbursed 2–3 weeks after classes start. The remaining 40% is provided midway through your program. Example: (For a 10-month program with $12,000 tuition and $23,000 in approved grant funding) 1️) Within 2–3 weeks of starting classes: OSAP sends $21,000 to the college → After tuition is deducted, $13,800 is deposited into your account. 2️) After 5 months: OSAP sends the remaining $14,000 → After tuition deduction, $9,200 is deposited into your account.
  • Will earning income while studying affect my OSAP eligibility?
    There are income limits, but moderate earnings do not affect OSAP eligibility: For programs longer than 40 weeks: Up to $16,800 in earnings is allowed without impacting OSAP. For programs shorter than 40 weeks: Up to $11,600 in earnings is allowed.
  • What types of programs are available?
    Programs that lead to strong employment opportunities include: Business: Accounting, payroll, marketing, sales, customer service Healthcare Administration: Dental and medical office administration IT: Computer technician, network administration, web design Social Services: Personal Support Worker (PSW), Community Service Worker (CSW)
  • Are the degrees or certifications obtained from the Academy of Learning through Schools ON AIR officially recognized?
    Yes, they are officially recognized. Academy of Learning is the largest and most reputable career education institution in Canada, with campuses across the country. It offers various nationally recognized certifications, including Bookkeeping, Personal Support Worker (PSW), and Community Service Worker (CSW).
  • Do I need to attend campus for the programs?
    It depends on the program: Online programs: Most courses allow you to study online at your own pace. In-person requirements: Personal Support Worker (PSW): Requires 4 live classes per week and 1 practical training session at the Mississauga campus. Community Service Worker (CSW): Some live online classes are required, but no campus attendance is necessary.
  • When does repayment start if I withdraw from my program?
    If you withdraw, your six-month repayment grace period begins immediately after your withdrawal is reported.
  • What happens if I withdraw from my studies?
    Your school will try to support you in continuing your education. If you officially withdraw, the school reports it to the government. Any grant funding you received may be converted into a loan, meaning you will have to repay the full amount.
  • When do I need to start repaying my OSAP loan?
    Loan repayment begins six months after completing your studies. If you are unemployed at that time, you can apply for Repayment Assistance to delay payments.
  • Can both spouses apply for OSAP at the same time?
    Yes, both spouses can apply separately and receive financial assistance.
  • How much funding can I receive from OSAP?
    The amount varies based on your program, study period, family income, and dependents. For example, if your family income is $55,000 or lower and you have two children, you may receive: Loan: Approximately $15,000 Grant: Approximately $22,300 (which you do not have to repay) Total funding: Around $37,300 for a 10-month certificate program
  • Does OSAP have interest on loans?
    Yes, interest applies to OSAP loans after the repayment period begins. The current interest rate is approximately 2.5%, which is lower than standard loan rates.
  • Can I choose to receive only grants and not loans?
    Yes, when applying for OSAP, you can opt out of loans and receive only grant funding.
  • Do I have to repay the OSAP funding?
    OSAP provides two types of financial aid: Loan: This must be repaid after graduation. Grant: If you complete your studies as planned, you do not need to repay this portion.
  • I have applied for refugee status and am waiting for the decision. Can I apply for OSAP?
    No, only those who have officially been granted refugee status (approved refugees) are eligible for OSAP. If your refugee application is still under review, you are not yet eligible.
  • Is there an age limit to apply for OSAP?
    No, there is no age limit. As long as you are an Ontario resident, a Canadian citizen, or a permanent resident, you can apply for OSAP at any age—even if you are 70 or older.
